Keynote Lecture: Surgical treatment of rectal prolapse: which choice?

Learning objectives: Evidence of high level studies on the surgical repair of total rectal prolapse is limited. Transanal procedures (Delorme, Altemeir, Stapled Transection) are associated with very low immediate postoperative morbidity but higher rates of recurrence and worse functional results as compared to transabdominal repair. They are reserved for high risk patients. Transabdominal procedures are nowadays performed by laparoscopy with very low recurrence. Of those, posterior suture or prosthesis rectopexy is associated with increased rate of severe postoperative constipation as compared to resection rectopexy. Ventral prosthesis colpo-rectopexy by laparoscopy is rapidly gaining popularity, as being associated with very low morbidity and satisfactory functional results.
