It was my great honor and pleasure to have this exceptional opportunity for the European Society of Coloproctology (ESCP) Japanese visiting fellowship. My heartbeat actually increased rapidly when I received the decision letter from the Japanese Society of Coloproctology (JSCP) accepting the travelling fellowship. Planning the visiting schedules and picturing myself travelling in Europe even accelerated my scientific concerns in the field of coloproctology in daily practice. This fellowship allowed me to visit up to 3 academic institutes in Europe, followed by attending the annual meeting in conjunction with an original paper presentation.

ESCP is delighted to have been able to increase the amount of fellowship support offered through the Society over the past 12 months, with ten new fellowships being offered in 2013.  Since the start of 2012, a total of 21 three-month fellowships have been offered, made possible through grants from Medtronic and Covidien, together with funds from ESCP’s Training and Education fund.

I was very happy to receive the British Journal of Surgery prize for my paper: 'Does mechanical bowel preparation preceding colon cancer operation affect five year mortality and cancer recurrence rate?' at the ESCP Annual Meeting in Vienna in September 2012. As part of the ESCP/ASCRS reciprocal Travelling Fellow program, I was able to present my paper again at the ASCRS meeting in Phoenix, Arizona this year, and I would like to thank both ESCP and ASCRS for this opportunity.

Ever since visiting Chūo General Hospital (Tokyo) in 1999 to visit dr. Junichi Iwadare, it has been my sincere wish to visit Japan again. The wonderful combined initiative by the Japanese and European Societies has finally made this possible for me.It was a great honour, to be selected for this wonderful opportunity. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my hosts, prof. Tadahiko Masaki and Dr. Hiroyoshi Matsuoka for organising and hosting my trip to and through Japan.
