Additional information
As a clinical doctor, I strongly believe that daily practice should be connected to research work, to constantly improve patient care. As qualitative research can only be performed with the correct background knowledge, I have completed a masters program in clinical epidemiology.
During my PhD fellowship, I developed an enthusiasm for translational research projects. I have defended my PhD-dissertation with distinction in October 2004 ('The development of new treatment strategies for oesophageal carcinoma'), and have combined clinical work with (fundamental) research projects ever since.
After finishing my surgical training in 2009, I have been working as a colorectal fellow specialising in proctology and laparoscopic surgery at the Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals, funded by the KWF (Koningin Wilhelmina Fonds). This Dutch organisation on medical oncology supports medical specialists by providing a 2-year budget for clinical specialization, and stimulates the development of collaborative research programs. Here I analysed the predictive value of isolated tumour cells and circulating cells in colorectal cancer patients.
Since January 2012, I am working as a staff surgeon at the AMC. Here, my field of interest changed from oncology to IBD. Nowadays, I am a specialized IBD-surgeon treating this fascinating disease in all its complexity, in a multidisciplinary setting. I still combine clinical work with translational research, which is currently funded by an innovative research incentive grant from The Netherlands organization for health research and development. My research group has a long-standing history in performing cutting edge research. This varies from international multicenter RCT’s directly comparing surgery to medical treatment (LIRIC, PISA, ACCURE), to basic laboratory science (where we currently analyze the role of the mesentery in Crohn’s disease, and the role of the appendix in ulcerative colitis). The collaboration with gastroenterologists, pathologists, and specialists from the laboratory, including biobanking of biopsies and surgical resection material, ensures that we are truly delivering bench-to-bedside research lines.
To improve the collaboration with other European IBD-experts, I am also a member of the S-ECCO guideline committee.
