Learning objectives: The treatment algorithm for early rectal cancer is complex as there are a number of options available. This presentation will focus on issues involved including staging tumours by endoscopy, radiology, ultrasound and clinical features. In addition, patient factors that are important in guiding the optimum management in each individual patient will be discussed. Management of these lesions requires access to a variety treatments and staging modalities and is a true multidisciplinary activity. At the end of the presentation delegates will have considered these issues in more detail and understand how decisions are made in early rectal cancer management.
Clinical/research background
Graham Williams is a Consultant Colorectal Surgeon at the Royal Wolverhampton Hospitals Trust. He trained in colorectal surgery in Minneapolis and St Paul, Minnesota and Birmingham UK. He is Co-editor of Contemporary Coloproctology and an Associate Editor of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum. He is Past President of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland. His clinical interests within colorectal surgery include colorectal cancer, anal sepsis and rectal prolapse. His research interests include anal sepsis and fistula, endoanal ultrasound and colonoscopy. He was lead author on th 2013 ACPGBI position statement on the management of malignant colonic polyps.
