Professional title: The John E. Connolly Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery
Date of primary qualification: 1991
Current Institution: University of California, Irvine School of Medicine
Title of invited presentation:
Modern Treatment of Appendicitis
Learning objectives:
To understand the advantages and disadvantages of minimally invasive treatment of appendicitis in select populations. To understand the appropriate setting for consideration of non-operative therapy of appendicitis. To recognize the appropriate use of imaging options prior to operation for appendicitis in various settings.
Summary of clinical/research background
Dr Michael Stamos has been an active clinician/educator and researcher in the field of colon and rectal surgery for the past two plus decades. He began his career in the city of Los Angeles after completing his training at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans under Drs. John Ray, Byron Gathright and Terry Hicks. For a little over 10 years, he worked at the county hospital of UCLA, and cared for many patients with advanced diseases due to limited health care access. It is here that he developed an interest in appendicitis, and helped establish non operative treatment of advanced appendicitis as a viable option. In 2002 he moved to Orange County California to establish the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the University of California, Irvine. He has since risen to the leadership of the department, assuming the position of Chair in 2010. The Colon and Rectal Surgery Division has grown to 4 members and they are known for their expertise in minimally invasive (laparoscopic and robotic) surgery. They also have established themselves as a productive research group, emphasizing clinical trials and outcomes research. Most recently, Dr. Stamos has been successful in establishing and leading a clinical collaborative between all 5 University of California Medical Centers (UC Irvine, UCLA, UC San Francisco, UC San Diego and UC Davis), and they have been awarded a large research grant to support their work.
