Low rectal cancer remains a challenge with a high risk of local recurrence and poorer survival. Surgical techniques have improved in recent years and an increasing awareness of the surgeons of the value of improved surgical techniques and individualized treatment in the context of multidisciplinary team conferences have led to improved patient outcomes. Additional studies in the field is necessary.

Anna Martling is current a Senior Consultant Surgeon at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden , which is tertiary referral center for locally advanced colorectal cancer, including local recurrences and peritoneal carcinomatosis. Her research is mainly also within the field of colorectal cancer including several large randomized treatment trials, observational longitudinal studies, epidemiology and translational studies. She is a research group leader at the Karolinska Institutet and has a large national and international network.
