Learning objectives: The main objectives are to learn how to perform an anal sphincteroplasty. The video shows a incontinent woman that suffered an obstetric tear. The surgical procedure consists of the careful dissection of the intersphincteric plane and sphincteric ends of both internal and external anal sphincters. An individualized repair is done. The internal sphincter repair with resprbable sutures intends to increase the presive length of the anal canal, making easier to approximate the ends of the external sphincter that is also repaired as a classic overlapping sphicteroplasty.
Clinical/research background
José V. Roig has a particular interest in the management of anal incontinence and complex anorectal disease. He has developed clinical research on anorectal physiology (manometric studies, anorectal sensitivity, electrophysiology and video-dephecography) of several anal and colorectal disorders like rectal prolapse, complex fistulas or anorectal reconstructive surgery after low colorectal anastomosis. He has also investigated the results of several surgical techniques such as artificial bowel sphincter, or primary sphincter repair in anal fistula surgery, and the components and results of colorectal preoperative care and fast-track surgery.
He is a member of the European Society of Coloproctology, the American Society of Colorectal Surgeons and is a Past President of the Spanish Coloproctology Association.
